The ferry ride only takes about 20 minutes, port to port. It leaves from Portugal Cove on the main island. Here’s Gerard on board this quite large ferry for such a short ride. (Notice the fog in the background :( )
A look at the ferry docked on Bell Island.

It was almost lunch time when we got there and we noticed the lighthouse had a cafe, so we thought we’d go up there. The most northern tip of the island. It’s not a large island at all, maybe 8-9 km from tip to tip.
So we arrived there and noticed it just opened today! And, we were its first customers! We asked if there was anything special for that, but he just ignored us. I don’t know how he’d do with a bunch of people in there. He was struggling. He said it was his firs time doing this....hmmm. But we had our lunch.

This is what it looks like at the lighthouse. I took this picture of a picture, because it was so foggy outside, you could barely see the lighthouse, let alone the landscape. Beautiful.

After lunch, we headed down to the main town on the island, Wabana, and did the mine tour. They hauled out high grade iron ore from 6 different mines on the island. And there’s lots more of it available. It’s just cost of production. They’re all closed right now. Here I am, ready to go underground.
This was our tour guide, Ed. This shows part of the #2 mine and the white part shows where we’re going. It’s a walkable slope.

The mine goes way down under Conception Bay, about 2-3 miles for this one. We didn’t go that far. This shows the candle used to light the way when the mine first opened in the early 1900s. All that ore around it is high grade iron ore. The walls are full of it.

Interesting tour that took about 45 minutes.
We then headed down to the south end of the island. We went as far as we could with the vehicle, then got out and walked. This is what lay before us. Absolutely stunning. And this isn’t from a photo! The fog cleared enough by this time.

A couple of boats down there, looking the other way. And the main island in the background.

Another chilly day here in the St. John’s area. But at least it hasn’t been raining for 3-4 days now. It’s supposed to get better from here on. We’ll see. The weather can change hourly here in Newfoundland. When we got back, others went to the store, and I did some much-needed laundry. It was a good day!
Tomorrow we’re leaving our easternmost destination and starting to head back west.
