Welcome to Newfoundland

On Monday, we loaded up and boarded the Blue Puttees bound for Port aux Basques.  Here we are waiting to board.  The Hollingers are in front of us.

This is our ferry ship.

And this is from our seats on board.  Good job we’re inside!

The crossing took about 6-1/2 hours, but we had booked seats in a private lounge where they had comfy “lazy boy” type chairs.  Here’s a lazy boy.

We also booked Tibby a kennel so we could visit him during the voyage and let him out of his cage.  We could have left him in the truck, but then we wouldn’t be able to go down and visit him.  He was appreciative, but he wasn’t happy when we would leave him in that room.  He made it just fine, and we’ll do the same when we go back - which is booked for July 10th.

This is Port aux Basques harbour while we’re getting off the ship.

And, here we are in Newfoundland...lovely weather.

Foggy, and SNOW in them thar hills.

Yep, the weather here has been less than kind to Newfoundlanders.  We landed around 6:15 pm and drove about 30 km from the ferry to Doyles, NL.
The wind on the way here was WILD to say the least.  Gerard and John were holding on for dear life.  There had been a sign warning of high winds for truckers, and there were.  Plus it was raining.  We were extremely glad to be off the road.

It did clear up a little though, and here we are all set up for the night.

Yesterday, we drove from Doyles to Cow Head, which is in the Gros Morne area.

Gotta love signs we see along the way.  This one to warn of moose is humourous as it shows the moose looking at the damaged car.  I’ll try to get a better shot of it...kinda blurry.  And the washroom signs are quite funny as well.

The day wasn’t bad, but there were times it was very foggy, especially up in the “mountains”.  This shows the low cloud, and we had to drive up into that.

This is driving along the East Arm in Gros Morne.  Interesting the cloud above, blocking the view of the mountains, and the cloud below, coming in from the sea, I guess.  This was taken through the side window, so not a great shot, but it gives the idea.

We arrived in Cow Head around 4:30 after a few stops and John unhooked his RV and drove us to the local grocery store.  It wasn’t a bad evening at all and we’re all set up along the little bay here in Cow Head.

We had bought some Screech during the day and Judy and I decided to try it out.

It is rum, so if you like rum, you’d like it straight up, or with coke or something.  Someone had suggested putting it in hot chocolate.  Wow!  That really tasted good.  Kinda likin’ that Screech!

We took a walk into town after dinner to Neddy’s Bar.  Unfortunately, no entertainment this night.  But we had a drink then moseyed on back.  These are daffodils just in full bloom.  Long winters here!

This was a building we passed on the way back.  Colourful.

So this morning we’re packing up again and heading to L’anse aux Meadows.  A drive about the same as we had yesterday.  The weather/wind isn’t so great today, but we’ll take our time.
