New Brunswick

We drove through the rest of Maine 2 days ago, and saw a sign that Canada was that way!  OK, we’ll do that.

The weather had been quite warm the previous day, and this day it was no more than 8C and rainy.  Brrrr.  We arrived at Fredericton, NB, and stayed at this nice spot on the St. John River.  This photo were actually taken the next day as it was too cold to be out the day we arrived.  All we did the rest of that day was go into town for a few groceries, then were inside the rest of the evening.  But a beautiful spot on the river.

We have 2 days to get to North Sydney where we’ve booked into a place for 2 nights.  We wanted to go into Fredericton to see the legislature building there, so we did that yesterday morning.  And here it is.

We went inside and did a half hour free tour of the building.  This is in the centre of the staircase area, but no one knows what it is, nor where it came from.  It’s been around since the origin of the first building (which burnt down).

This staircase is the oldest of its kind.  It was supported only by its own forces - being spiralled against the walls.  There were no supports whatsoever.  However, they decided to reinforce it with steel bars a few years ago when it seemed some of the wood was starting to come apart.  Good plan.

This is the legislature and our guide talking to us.  A well-versed young man who graduated from the sciences and is going to go back to school and do either political science or law.  He loves his work!

A pensive listener in the gallery.

This is the old senate room they no longer have, of course.  But they use it for various committee meetings, etc.

The table is interesting.  12 men of the day could sit around this table - they were much smaller then.  When a bill was signed, the table was turned so the ink would not smear, which would happen if they moved the paper.  They obviously had no left-handed people as that bill would have been smeared everywhere anyway.  Trust me...I know.  I first learned to write with a pen and inkwell.  Messy job.

When we were finished at the legislature, we wandered around the town a bit.  The cost of living here is much less than where we are.  Here are the parking rates.  Bet you don’t see this any more.

The population in New Brunswick is declining as young people are leaving to go elsewhere - typically to the bigger cities of Canada.  The lure of more money draws them away, unfortunately.  Also a higher cost of living, but that’s not a deterrent.

One last photo from our spot in Fredericton.

We left before 1 pm yesterday and headed for Nova Scotia!

We arrived at our RV park in the late afternoon.

And there were the Hollingers!  We expected they would be here because we had been in contact with them.  They had stayed up in Perth, NB, the night before and we had told them where we would be this night.

We sat outside on this beautiful sunny day and waited to see if we could spy Nessie in the lake.  She didn’t show.  Well, it was called Blair Lake anyway.

After we had some dinner, we did a bit of a walk around the park.  Have I mentioned I like signs?

I’m not sure why this one was there among all these trees.

So that was yesterday.  Today we head up to North Sydney on Cape Breton Island.  We’ll be with the Hollingers the rest of our trip.  Yay!
